Abstract
Glial cells, in providing a framework for the nerve cells and their processes, establish numerous mutual contacts at which specialized cell junctions can be demonstrated by appropriate electron-microscopic procedures. Although thin-section electron microscopy is usually adequate to reveal distinct junctional appositions, freeze-fracture replicas are often required to define more precisely the features of the junctional membranes, thus providing a more reliable classification of the type of intercellular specialization(s) involved in the cell-to-cell contact. Freeze-fracture replicas are particularly useful in the classification of cell junctions in tissue culture.
