Abstract

The interface between laboratory investigation and clinical oncology remains an area of productive discussion between cell biologists and physicians treating malignancies. Researchers in cell biology have developed techniques for cloning human tumor cells, which now permit in vitro studies of fresh human tumors as well as established cell lines. These technical advances have become standardized among laboratories, and a human tumor clonogenic assay (HTCA) now is done on primary human tumors in many centers throughout the world [1–3]. Some types of human tumors have been easier to grow in vitro than others. Specifically, cancers of the ovary [4], lung [5, 6], breast [7, 8], and melanomas [9, 10] have been successfully grown in many laboratories, studying the effects of colony formation following treatment with various cytotoxic drugs.
