Structural Analysis of the BC1 Complex from Beef Heart Mitochondria by the Sided Hydropathy Plot and by Comparison with other BC Complexes

  • Chapter

Abstract

The bc1, complex from beef heart mitochondria consists of eleven protein subunits, only three of which contain the four redox centres.1 Since the primary structures of several subunits of the be complexes from various species have been determined by amino acid sequencing or deduced from the DNA sequence, an attempt is made to gain more insight into the general structure of the complex by a comparative approach, i.e., by sequence comparisons and by hydropathy analyses. To achieve this, we have not only used the method of Kyte and Doolittle,2 but developed our own graphic method for the analysis of amphipathic secondary structures, i.e., amphipathic α-helices or ß-sheets.
