Abstract
This paper investigates managerial issues which may appear when table partitioning and replication is introduced in a distributed relational database system, particularly, in the following four areas: (i) how to define table partitioning and replication, (ii) how to represent it internally, (iii) what is an appropriate method of system cataloging , and (iv) how to ensure database consistency. By introducing dummy replicas, both table partitioning and replication can be treated internally in a unified manner. A system catalog structure which is efficient to maintain the table partitioning and replication information is proposed. Lastly, investigation on database consistency problem is made and nested consistency control mechanism is proposed.
