ETL Reflectivity as a Feature for Recognition of Top-Layer Marine Sediments

For the sake of improving acoustic recognition of top-layer sediments of the sea bottom, ETL reflectivity is proposed in this paper. As a result of eliminating the influence of surface roughness and volume inhomogeneities of the seabed, ETL reflectivity correlates closely with top-layer sediment. The results of sea-going experiments show that ETL reflectivity is a better feature for recognition of sediment than the conventional ones measured by the average amplitude or energy of bottom echoes.
