Abstract
We review evidence for the presence of large disorder potentials in granular metals and describe a detailed theoretical analysis of conductivity that takes into account both potential disorder and statistical aspects of relevant structural features of real systems. The theory predicts a temperature dependence close to simple activation in disagreement with what is found experimentally. We conclude that an essential feature of the physics of transport in these systems has yet to be identified.
