Cocaine: The American Experience

The Cocaine Crisis

Abstract

Cocaine use is not a new phenomenon. Its early use by Andean Indians in South America and its later appearance in Europe during the nineteenth century where pharmacological researchers established its medicinal value have been exhaustively chronicled in the literature (Ellinwood and Kilbey, 1977; Byck, 1975; Mortimer, 1901; Musto, 1973). At least 50 years ago its anaesthetic properties, central nervous system actions, and its cardiovascular effects were known. It was used as an anaesthetic, as treatment for seasonal allergies, and later as a pharmacological adjunct in the treatment of opium, morphine, and alcohol addictions. It had widespread use in the United States and in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as an ingredient in many patent medicines, tonics, and soft drinks.
