Drag Reduction in Aqueous Solution of Hexadecyltrimethylammonium-Salicylate

  • Chapter
Surfactants in Solution

Abstract

The cationic surfactant n-hexadecyltrimethylammoniumsalicylate, C16TA-Sal, forms rodlike micelles in aqueous solutions above a characteristic concentration, Ct. It is shown that these dilute aqueous solutions of C16TA-Sal reduce the friction loss in turbulent pipe flow. The temperature dependence of the CMCI, the critical micelle concentration, and the Ct was established by electrical conductivity measurements. While the CMCI shows little temperature dependence, the Ct increases very rapidly with rising temperature. The length of the rodlike micelles, as determined by electric birefringence, decreases with rising temperature and increases with rising surfactant concentration.
