Psychopharmacology of Repeated Seizures: Possible Relevance to the Mechanism of Action of Electroconvulsive Therapy

  • Chapter
Handbook of Psychopharmacology

Abstract

The last few years have seen a marked increase in the research on the biochemical and pharmacological consequences of repeated electroconvulsive shock (ECS), for several reasons. The first reason is that electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is still acknowledged as the most successful treatment for severe depressive illness (see Brandon et al., 1984: Royal College of Psychiatrists, 1977; Fink, 1979). The second reason is that greater insight has now been gained into the mechanism of action of antidepressant drugs, so it seems reasonable to determine whether the experimental effects of ECS are similar to those of the drugs. The third reason is that ECT remains a controversial treatment, and thus a greater understanding of its mechanism of action may eventually lead to the development of a pharmacological agent with the efficacy of ECT but, it is to be hoped, fewer side effects and less public disquiet.
