Abstract
Some of the factors causing asphyxia at birth are described in detail in Chapter 17 on high-risk infants (HRI), but it is important to be aware of the causes that may compromise oxygenation in full-term babies:

Prolonged labor.

Cephalopelvic disproportion.

3.
Mother’s exhaustion during labor.
-
4.
Cord around the neck, a frequent cause of asphyxia during delivery.
-
5.
Difficulties in delivery such as breech presentations.
-
6.
Trauma of birth in large babies.
-
7.
Eclampsia.
-
8.
Placenta previa.
-
9.
Abruptio placenta.
-
10.
Syndrome of meconium aspiration.
