  • Chapter
Perinatal Asphyxia

Abstract

Some of the factors causing asphyxia at birth are described in detail in Chapter 17 on high-risk infants (HRI), but it is important to be aware of the causes that may compromise oxygenation in full-term babies:

  1. 1.

    Prolonged labor.

  2. 2.

    Cephalopelvic disproportion.

  3. 3.

    Mother’s exhaustion during labor.

  4. 4.

Cord around the neck, a frequent cause of asphyxia during delivery.

  5. 5.

Difficulties in delivery such as breech presentations.

  6. 6.

Trauma of birth in large babies.

  7. 7.

    Eclampsia.

  8. 8.

    Placenta previa.

  9. 9.

    Abruptio placenta.

  10. 10.

    Syndrome of meconium aspiration.
