Abstract

A variety of nonribosomal, nonhistone proteins are involved in the organization of the nucleolus and in the assembly of ribosomes. One of the more extensively characterized polypeptides, designated C23 by Orrick et al.,1 has a molecular weight of approximately 110,000 and has properties which suggest that it performs these functions; e.g., it is predominantly localized to the fibrillar regions within the nucleolus,2,3 it has a high affinity for silver as do the chromosomal nucleolus organizer regions (NORs)4 and has been localized at the NORs5.
