Abstract
The method of simultaneous multiple peptide synthesis (SMPS–as illustrated in Figure 1), developed recently in this laboratory (1, 2, 3) has made the synthesis of large numbers (>100) of specific peptides possible in amounts useful for virtually all studies (>10mg) and in a greatly shortened time frame (weeks). These methods address the very rapid escalation in the need for synthetic peptides for the development of synthetic peptide vaccines (4–5), the detailed study of antigen-antibody interactions (1, 6–11, 28), the preparation of optimal analogs of biologically active peptides (12–14), the optimization of peptide antigens of clinical diagnostic utility (15–17), the mapping of protein products of brain specific genes (18,19), and the study of peptide and protein conformational parameters (20–22). The limiting factor in the majority of these studies has been the availability and cost of the desired peptides.
