Group VIII Transition Metals

  • R. J. Goodfellow

Abstract

There is considerable chemical similarity between the group VIII transition metals despite the increments in valence electrons between the iron, cobalt, and nickel triads. Conversely, there is considerable divergence in the nuclear properties of their naturally occurring spin–active nuclei, which accounts for the differential development of the study of their NMR. Thus 59Co was among the earliest nuclei to be studied, and the consequent recognition of the phenomenon of chemical shift must represent the starting point of the chemists’ interest in NMR. By contrast, observations for nuclei of three of the metals (Ru, Rh, and Pd) as complexes in solution have only been made since the general survey of Harris and Mann,(1) and such measurements are still lacking for iridium. Recent applications in coordination chemistry(2) and possible biological uses(3) have been reviewed. Further articles have considered 195Pt(4) and 103Rh(5) NMR. As magnetic resonance in metals and alloys is of peripheral chemical interest and has been the subject of a recent volume,(6) it will not be considered further. The chemical shifts of transition metal nuclei have been discussed by Kidd.(7)
