The Noble Gases

  • Chapter
Multinuclear NMR

Abstract

Excluding 3He, the rare-gas nuclei amenable to NMR investigation are 21Ne, 83Kr, 129Xe, and 131Xe. Of these only Kr and Xe form compounds that are stable under ordinary conditions, and only 129Xe NMR spectra have been observed in chemical environments other than the pure element, although Kr compounds have been characterized by 19F NMR spectroscopy.(1) Thus, we will divide this chapter into two parts: (1) 129Xe NMR studies of bonding and structure of xenon compounds, and (2) 3He, 21Ne, 83Kr, 129Xe, and 131Xe NMR studies of nonspecific intermolecular interactions.
