Abstract

With a natural abundance of only 0.037%, a receptivity that is 0.61 of that of 13C, and a moderate quadrupole moment (eQ= -2.6 x 10-26 e cm2), 17O (I=5/2), the only magnetic isotope of oxygen, is poorly suited for study by NMR. Nonetheless the chemical importance of the element oxygen has contributed to considerable interest in its NMR spectroscopy, and following the earliest pioneering studies(1–6) the advent of Fourier transform methods and especially high-field spectrometers have now established the technique on a routine basis.
