Abstract

Silent myocardial ischemia has been increasingly recognized and shown to be of prognostic importance. While most emphasis in the evaluation of patients with silent ischemia has been on the use of ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring there is also an important role for radionuclide techniques. Radionuclide techniques are of value in: 1) The detection of myocardial ischemia; 2) in investigating pathophysiologic mechanisms; 3) determining prognosis; 4) evaluating the effect of therapeutic interventions. This discussion will emphasize the role of radionuclide techniques in patients entering trials to determine the effect of therapeutic interventions in patients with silent myocardial ischemia.
