Abstract
Communication between the endocrinologist, transplant surgeon, and anesthesiologist is necessary to achieve optimal management of the type I diabetic patient undergoing pancreatic transplantation. Because the anesthesiologist is involved in the entire perioperative period, it is important for him or her to understand both the physiology of the pancreas and the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus. In addition, the anesthesiologist should be able to recognize when the patient becomes metabolically unstable during the course of surgery.
