Abstract
Chronic pain patients, particularly patients with a history of head or neck injury, frequently present with pain complaints and life disruption in apparent excess of documentable structural damage. Such patients often seem totally convinced of their disability, despite minor physical pathology and an apparent lack of reasons for psychological investment in a chronic illness or disabled role. They also seem deficient in adaptive capability, particularly in terms of the physical and psychological adjustments necessary to cope with chronic pain.
