Radiation-Induced Alterations in Cyclooxygenase Product Release: An Overview

Abstract

Cyclooxygenase products, by virtue of their vasoconstrictor (PGF2a and TXA2) (1–5) and vasodilator actions (PGE2 and PGI2) (1–3,6–9) as well as their platelet aggregatory (TXA2, PGG2 and PGH2) (10–14) and anti-aggregatory properties (PGE2 and PGI2) (15–18) may play a role in radiation-induced tissue injury. This hypothesis is based on the observation that radiation exposure results in tissue injury (19–35) and tissue injury is associated with the release of cyclooxygenase products (36–39).
