Abstract
Recent studies have demonstrated the presence of NGF, NGF specific mRNA [1], and NGF receptors (NGFR) [2, 3] in the central nervous system (CNS). Cholinergic nerve terminals within the hippocampus and cortex have been shown to internalize iodinated NGF and retrogradely transport it to their cell bodies in the septum and magnocellular basal forebrain [4, 5]. In addition, NGF has been shown to selectively increase choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) activity of basal forebrain both in vivo [6] and in vitro [7]. However, survival or fiber outgrowth of cultured fetal septal cholinergic neurons was not affected by exogenous NGF [7]. The present study utilized cell cultures of septal, hip-pocampal, and cortical tissue to identify and characterize the NGFR bearing cells and to determine the effect of exogenously added NGF on NGFR positive cells.
