Abstract
Atriopeptin (AP), the atrial natriuretic peptide, is a 28 amino acid hormone that is synthesized in the atria of mammalian hearts [1]. During atrial stretch, AP is released into the circulation, where it binds to receptors in the renal glomeruli and papilla, resulting in profound natriuresis and diuresis (for review see Refs. 2–6). AP also binds to the adrenal glomerulosa, inhibiting the secretion of aldosterone, and to vascular smooth muscle, causing vasodilatation. AP, therefore, acts as a counterregulatory hormone to reduce blood volume and blood pressure, particularly during right atrial volume overload.
