Abstract

The very first virus associated with aseptic meningitis in man was Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis (LCM). Working at the National Institute of Health in Washington, D.C., Armstrong and Lillie published the initial description in 1934 (1). The virus was found after repeated passage in monkeys of human brain tissue from an apparent case of St. Louis encephalitis. While the monkeys presented symptoms similar to those elicited by other encephalitis virus isolates, the presence of another agent was suspected when the 6th passage material produced clinical disease in a monkey with proven immunity to St. Louis encephalitis. This new isolate produced symptoms, faithfully recapitulated by repeated passage in monkeys or mice, that were quite distinct from any other known encephalitis virus. As so often happens in science the same discovery was made almost simultaneously in different laboratories.
