Abstract

This discussion will first examine some of the unique properties of viruses as antigens since this is particularly important in distinguishing the immune response to viruses from that to nonviral antigens. Next, the general mechanisms involved in the generation of an immune response will be described. Finally, the significance of the humoral and cellular immune responses in the pathogenesis of viral infections including virus-induced immunopathological processes will be discussed.
