Part of the book series: Developments in Medical Virology ((DIMV,volume 5))

Abstract

Papovaviruses are DNA viruses which are divided into two genera, papillomaviruses and polyomaviruses. Papillomaviruses, although widely distributed in human and animal species, are not known to invade the central nervous system. Polyomaviruses, on the other hand, produce an opportunistic, demyelinating infection of immunocompromised patients, progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) and have been suggested as etiologic agents of human brain tumors. The present chapter deals with the role of the polyoma subgroup of papovaviruses in human systemic and central nervous system infection, discusses human and animal data pertaining to the pathogenesis of PML, and reviews the possible role of these agents in central nervous system neoplasia.
