Abstract

The function of the heart as a pump depends on the co-ordination of electrical, mechanical and metabolic activities of its cells. The prime regulator of these activities seems to be the intracellular calcium concentration which is subject to neural and humoral control mechanisms involving, in many instances, cyclic AMP and cyclic GMP.
