Abstract
Vascular access for hemodialysis should ideally be safe, painless, convenient, easy to employ, available for use soon after placement, resistant to infection and thrombosis, and adaptable to the patient with poor peripheral vessels. None of the standard forms of vascular access fulfills all of these criteria.
