Thermoregulated Antigen Expression by Leishmania Promastigotes
The biochemical characterization of antigens expressed by Leishmania ssp have often been limited to the promastigote form of the organism because it is difficult to obtain adequate quantities of amastigotes for extended studies. To this date the direct analysis of amastigote antigens has not been possible for some species (ie. L. aethiopica) due to the lack of experimental animal or in vitro infection models. However the development of protective or immunotherapeutic anti-leishmanial vaccines will require the deliniation of T-cell and antibody effector activities against both promastigote and amastigote expressed antigenic determinants.
