Abstract

The many different antigens which comprise the surface membrane of leishmania play contrasting roles in parasite-host cell interactions. Some of these antigens influence virulence and infectivity (Kink and Chang, 1987; Kweider et al., 1987; Sacks et al. 1987), others contribute to pathogenecity (Bordier et al., 1982; Anthony et al., 1985) and still others elicit immunosuppressive or immunoprophylactic responses (Slutzky and Greenblatt, 1977; Rodrigues et al., 1986). Thus, successful development of a vaccine against the various species of leishmania which infect man is contingent upon the identity of the defined membrane sub-units which induce protection without causing deleterious side-effects.
