Abstract
The ground squirrel or spermophil (Citellus citellus) is a very common rodent in the fields around Thessaloniki. from preliminary work conducted 50 years ago [1, 2] it is known that this rodent is sensitive to experimental infection and can be used in the diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis. This old observation, when related to the frequent appearance of visceral leishmaniasis in dogs around Thessaloniki [3] led to the present research studies to confirm the possible sensitivity of the ground squirrel to Leishmania infection and to determine its role in the epidemiology and ecology of the protozoan.
