Abstract

CMV is an important pathogen in immunocompromised persons, including neonates, AIDS patients, organ transplant patients and oncology patients. Immunologic studies in humans and mice indicate a critical role for cytotoxic lymphocytes in recovery from infection. Cytotoxic T cell responses to products of the immediate early genes may be particularly important and these findings may provide a basis for the development of effective vaccines and for strategies to adoptively transfer immunity to CMV.
