Molecular Aspects of Human B and T Lymphocyte Responses to HIV

  • R. F. Siliciano
Part of the Developments in Medical Virology book series (DIMV, volume 6)

The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) induces readily detectable virus-specific B and T lymphocyte responses in humans. These responses may control the infection for various periods of time but ultimately fail to prevent the development of AIDS. This chapter reviews of the human immune response to HIV-1, focusing on those immune mechanisms that may exert a beneficial anti-viral effect and those that may contribute to the pathophysiology of HIV-1 infection by promoting the depletion of CD4+ T lymphocytes. Particular emphasis is placed on a novel mechanism for the depletion of CD4+ T cells which involves cytolytic T lymphocytes (CTL) specific for the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp120.
