Abstract

Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) has become well known to the general medical community over the last 20 years. This notoriety has resulted from the publication of many case reports and several large clinical trials that show HSE to be the first viral brain disease amenable to treatment with specific antiviral compounds [1–38]. The development of the first successful therapies for a life-threatening viral infection ranks with the introduction of sulfonamides and penicillin for the treatment of bacterial infections. However, despite the magnitude of this advance, much still needs to be learned. Even with early diagnosis by brain biopsy and treatment with the best currently available antiviral compounds, one patient of each two with HSE will be unable to return to his or her premorbid activities [27, 35].
