Abstract
Atherosclerotic plaque is a leading cause of morbidity in the peripheral vasculature. The development of plaque is a result of degenerative changes in the intima of the blood vessel. In the lower extremities, this manifests as claudication, rest pain, or, in the most severe cases, as gangrene. Arterial bypass surgery, balloon angioplasty, and thrombolytic therapy have provided considerable improvements in the management of patients with arterial occlusive disease [1]. However, there are certain disadvantages and limitations to each of these treatment modalities. Laser angioplasty provides an alternative approach to therapy.
