Abstract

Optical fibers are a special class of waveguides designed to transmit a wide spectrum of optical radiation, from the ultraviolet to far infrared, over long distances at low loss. The development of optical fiber technology was mainly driven by the long-haul telephone carriers who desired a cheap, low-noise, high-reliability transmission system. Fortunately, numerous other fields, notably laser angioplasty, have benefited as well. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an introduction to the theory and application of optical fiber technology.
