Abstract

Diabetes and its complications is one of the leading causes of death in Europe and in the United States. The disease affects up to 3% of the population of Britain and up to 5% of Americans. Although the acute, short-term effects of diabetes may be controlled by administation of insulin, the long-term complications of the disease are often fatal. Diabetes is the main cause of blindness in Britain and other countries, and diabetics have an extraordinarily high incidence of renal failure (up to 17 times higher than the rest of the population), cardiovascular disease, and gangrene.
