Abstract
It is generally agreed that obesity is a condition in which the fat stores of the body are too large. However, the limitations of this simple definition soon become apparent: a young woman of normal body build may wish to be thinner, so in her opinion her fat store is too large — is she therefore obese? In a sense she is, but with such a subjective definition of obesity it is not possible to write sensibly about the measurements of body composition which are required for the investigation of obesity.
