Abstract
Osteoporosis is characterised by bone loss, the distribution of which is heterogenous. Measurement of bone mineral density at clinically relevant sites, for example, the vertebrae and femoral neck can be made using techniques such as quantitative computed tomography (QCT) and dual photon absorptiometry (DPA). Assessment of trabecular bone volume (TBV) in iliac crest biopsies has also been used as a diagnostic test for osteoporosis; however, this may not be representative of other skeletal sites. Previous studies of the relationship between spinal trabecular bone mineral density (BMD) and iliac crest TBV have produced conflicting results, some reporting a strong positive correlation (Bikle et al., 1985; Torres et al., 1986; Delmas et al., 1986) between the two measurements, and another failing to find any significant relationship (Ott et al., 1988). The aim of the present study was to investigate the correlation between spinal trabecular BMD and iliac crest TBV in several different patient groups.
