Abstract
Control and Management of new Synchronous Optical NETwork (SONET) Fiber Optics Transmission Systems (FOTS) has received considerable attention in the development of the SONET Phase- II standard. The primary focus of the Phase II work has been to standardize Operations, Administration, Maintenance and Provisioning (OAM&P) capabilities for the Data Communications Channels (DCCs) which are embedded within the SONET transport overhead bytes. Considerable effort has focussed on understanding the boundaries and requirements for the interconnection of the SONET based DCC network to an Operating Telecommunications Company’s (OTCs) operations data network. Northern Telecom has actively participated in the definition of the control and management requirements for the control network along with its customers and other FOTS vendors.
