Abstract
The intention of this book is to introduce to both experienced and budding microscopists some of the advances in techniques that have taken place over the past few years and, indeed, are still underway. It is not meant to be a complete survey of the huge field of microscopy, and many topics will not be addressed. In particular, established microscopial techniques will not be discussed; a comprehensive account of these has been given by Rochow and Rochow,(1) who concentrate on optical and electron microscopies but also give brief introduction to x-ray and acoustic microscopies. Such is the rate of advance, however, that their discussion of modern methods, particularly in x-ray microscopy, are very musch out of date even though their book was published only a decade ago.
