Abstract

In the introductory chapter of this book, we mentioned three categories of computationally intensive data analysis tasks related to the Human Genome Project: sequence analysis, linkage analysis and structural analysis. We presented in this book high performance computing methods that are used to perform biological sequence analysis including pairwise sequence comparison, multiple sequence alignment, and sequence similarity searching. We have demonstrated that parallel computing methods can greatly reduce the amount of time required to complete these sequence analysis tasks. We hope that our presentation will help to stimulate more work in this area.
