Abstract
Information retrieval (IR) is an established technology which has been delivering solutions to users for more than three decades yet it is still an active research area. This suggests that although much work has been done in this field, much remains to be accomplished. It is true to say that in over 30 years of research we have developed and evaluated a bewildering array of techniques for indexing and retrieving text and the techniques have slowly matured and improved through refinement rather than there having been one or a small number of really significant breakthroughs.
