Abstract
In the United States, the use of platelet transfusions increased progressively during the 1980’s [1]. However, in many centres including our own at the Perm-Jersey Region of the American Red Cross, this use has maintained a plateau during the first half of the 1990’s. Part of the explanation for this change may be the gradual adoption of a more stringent trigger for prophylactic platelet transfusion. The purpose of this paper is to review what is known about the pathophysiology of severe thrombocytopenia and the clinical data relevant to its management.
