Abstract
One of the major lines of hematopoietic stem cell commitment is to the production of megakaryocytes and platelets. Its importance rests ultimately in the homeokinetic release of platelets into the peripheral blood. Circulating platelets are crucial to the maintenance of homeostasis and vascular integrity and play a role in tumor cell metastasis. Platelets are derived as anuclear fragments of cytoplasm from megakaryocytes resident mainly in bone marrow.
