Abstract
Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) has been developed mainly by the telecommunications companies and is proposed as a standard for Broadband ISDN. It was independently developed by Bellcore, the research arm of AT&T in the USA, and several giant telecommunications companies in Europe. This has led to two possible future standards.
