Abstract
This section contains a collection of data sheets for adhesives used for the structural bonding of various materials, but whose various chemical bases lie outside the broad classes used elsewhere in this book. Included here are:
-
Cyan ate Ester — developed for bonding the new high-performance, fibre-reinforced composites with cyanate ester resin matrices. These materials have been proposed for aerospace applications requiring improved thermal performance, electrical properties (radomes) and moisture resistance.
-
Vinyl-containing — (either as a principal or secondary phase). These are mainly water-based dispersions. Included are examples of polyvinylacetate (PVA and PVAC -copolymer) adhesives. Commonly known as ‘white glue’, these are widely used in the woodworking industry. Those given here are considered the higher performance, ‘industrial’ types rather than products for household use.
-
Plastisol — commonly used in automotive assembly for large bond areas, low-load applications (bonding of bonnet and panel reinforcements to reduce flutter). Capable of bonding oily surfaces; some absorb the oil film during cure. Properties are semi-structural (low peel, low cleavage and will creep under prolonged static loading, but have good resistance to cyclic loads).
-
Ceramic-based — adhesives for very high temperature applications, i.e. 400 to ~1600°C. Temperatures which exceed the capabilities of any polymer-based materials. Used for bonding refractory materials (mainly ceramics) to themselves or other materials.
-
Unknown chemical base — details of some formulations are not stated by the manufacturers. In some cases a general description is used by the manufacturer, e.g. ‘synthetic resin’. Some of these are UV curing adhesives.
