Abstract
An understanding of the natural foods and feeding habits of farmed fish and shrimp can be a significant contributing factor in the planning of effective feeding regimes. While intensive fish farming has demonstrated the ability of some fish species to adapt to a wide range of feeding practices, their natural patterns of feeding behavior, which reflect anatomical and physiological adaptations to their environment and diet, should be taken into account when selecting feeds and planning feeding regimens on farms. In intensive culture systems fish or shrimp are fed on formulated feeds that differ significantly in size, taste or texture from their natural food. While their response to these feeds may be modified by the farm environment it also reflects their natural adaptations in feeding habit.
