Ecotypic Variation in the Physiology of Tropical Plants

  • Chapter
Tropical Forest Plant Ecophysiology

Abstract

Understanding the factors that determine the distributions of plant species has long been an objective of plant ecology. A basic premise of plant ecophysiology is that plant distributions are strongly influenced by interactions between the plant and its physical environment (Grace, 1987; Osmond et al., 1987; Woodward, 1987). Thus, ecophysiology has a natural interface with the study of plant distributions. There are at least four patterns of interacting physiological and ecological factors that could allow a plant to achieve a wide distribution.
