Abstract
The evidence for the existence of weak neutral currents was a very controversial topic in the early 1970’s, as was the evidence for the existence of the muon in the 1930’s. The neutral current controversy was particularly interesting because it revealed many aspects of the interrelationships between theory and experiment in our field. The history of this discovery also is very rich from the point of view of the evolution of experimental techniques in high energy particle physics.
