Expert systems for hazard evaluation

Abstract

Computers are often seen as very powerful, but very stupid, ‘number crunchers’ — because they work so much more quickly than human beings, will continue diligently with mindless chores, and, given appropriate precautions, are less prone to random errors, they can do calculations that are beyond practical human ability. But there are other activities to which computers are well suited, one of them being the application of logical reasoning. Reasoning is an aspect of intelligence, and so this use of computing contributes to research into the creation of artificial intelligence.
