Abstract

In NS, the representation of verbs, like nouns, involves both an ontology and generic knowledge.3 The verb ontology derives from both the Vendler (1967) classification scheme, which is concerned with linguistic properties of verbs, and the results of cognitive studies which identify distinctions that are important in human reasoning about events. The generic knowledge for verbs consists of typical and inherent implications of events. Psycholinguistic studies of verbal categorization find that implications, rather than semantic fields, are significant in human reasoning with verbs.
